How We Do It

During the course of the year, we
  • Accept donated equipment from individuals and corporations.
  • Assign a system number for inventory tracking purposes.
  • Refurbish the PC using any available parts to upgrade performance.
  • Assemble complete systems including modems, printers, sound cards and speakers.
  • Install the base operating system as well as word processing, spreadsheet, web browser and anti-virus software. We also include some educational software when appropriate.
  • Make arrangements for system delivery.

Since we always have more requests than available PCs, we generally follow a first-come, first-serve process. When we run worksops, PCs are distributed amongst the children at random.

Sometimes we receive donations of PCs that are no longer usable. When this happens, we extract any parts that may be valuable (e.g., hard drives, network cards, etc.), and any unusable parts are recycled. C4K does not charge for this recycling service, although we certainly appreciate donations to help defray the cost of the program. See the "Help Fund C4K" page for more information.
